Why I made this site
I’m Chinese. I created Eastward Stories because I want friends in other parts of the world to experience the richness and spirit of Chinese culture. A story can open the door to a person, a myth, an idea, or a way of life—and invite you to explore further.
Here, I hope you can enjoy the story first, then follow its context and sources at your own pace. We begin with China and plan to explore other East Asian traditions over time.
What we cover
People are one way into a story; myths, texts, rituals, places and craft can be just as revealing.
How we work
Each story identifies its period and place, explains unfamiliar terms, and lists the sources used. Documented history, traditional retellings and fiction inspired by older tales carry distinct labels. Where a historical detail is debated, we say so. Generated historical imagery is labeled as interpretation and is never presented as documentary evidence.
Language
The website has English and Chinese editions. Each story's text and podcast audio are prepared separately for each language; unfinished editions are clearly marked.
